Soul Food in New York
Rooted in the culinary traditions of African Americans, New York soul food restaurants harken back to the southern tables of the past where new communities were being formed and changed simultaneously. Common offerings at soul food restaurants include hearty portions of black-eyed peas, hushpuppies, fried okra, ham hock, and, of course, fried chicken. Cornbread and grits are also common sides, as are desserts like red velvet cake and sweet potato pie.
