In the 1960's misguided urban renewal razed dozens of historical sturctures in the heart of Nyack's downtown. They were replaced with a parking lot and a strip mall. Together with the Nyack Village Board of Trustees, Riverspace has now formed the Main Street Partnership, which is working to select a developer to transform the "Superblock" in the heart of town into a cluster of shops and apartments and a world-class arts center, all in keeping with the original charm of the village.
How will it work? Riverspace has site control of the buildings, while the Village controls the parking area. By forming the Main Street Partnership, we can offer one 4-acre site to developers, hopefully spurring a new era of vitality for Nyack. Meanwhile, Riverspace will work to see that:
an arts center is featured and supported;
all members of our diverse population are served;
jobs are created "today and tomorrow";
surrounding businesses thrive;
pre-development and arts center expenses are covered.
