That’s right, zip up that bomber jacket, put on your aviator shades, and start humming “Take My Breath Away,” because you’re boarding the aircraft carrier known as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. And oh yeah, they also happen to have a space shuttle, a British Airways Concorde, 27 authentically-restored aircraft and a guided missile submarine (so maybe practice your “Space Oddity” and “Yellow Submarine,” too?). Walk in the footsteps of WWII sailors, from the anchor chain room to officers’ staterooms. Get up an up-close look at the world’s first space shuttle while eavesdropping on an actual conversation between mission control and the Enterprise. See how you’d do in the close quarters of the Growler as you explore the torpedo room and more. From the bottom of the sea to the twinkling lights of outer space, you’re in for one heck of a journey.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (GLI) and Hamilton have launched EduHam at Home, a free digital program for students and their families to explore the world of Hamilton and America’s founding era together — ultimately creating and performing their own narrative in the form of a song, rap, spoken word or scene. Students are invited to submit their creations, and selected student performances will be shared on the Hamilton app, social media and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s website. Students follow in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s footsteps, learning how he incorporated primary sources into the songs he wrote for the show. Recommended for — but not limited to — students in 6th to 12th grade and their families nationwide, EduHam at Home provides an American history curriculum introducing students to the people, events and documents of the founding era.

Why do you buy certain things? Is it because you actually need or want those things? More often than not, it has a lot to do with marketing. If you’ve ever wanted to peek inside you kids’ brains to decode their attitudes, behaviors and ways of communicating (or total lack thereof …), this info-packed online course is a great resource. If you’re looking for something outside the mainstream offerings of Netflix or Hulu, we recommend checking out Film Movement Plus. Through our interactions with our students, there is this one question that always comes back: “How do I improve my brain?” This course is our answer to that one question. Because, as much as we would’ve liked to reveal the one magical trick to significantly enhance our brain, it simply doesn’t work that way. As we will see, there is no scientific evidence to back up the claims of brain games and other programs, even though they claim they do. One of my all time favourite quotes about the brain is from Emerson Pugh, an American scientist, who said, “If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn’t.” I guess that says it all.
You might have more time now, or less time. The key is to use it wisely. Pick up tips in this online course to help you stop procrastinating — finish that project you started months ago, start checking off your to-do list and just get more done in general.

Fans of classic country music and rockabilly already know the good word on Jenny Tolman. Throughout 2019 album There Goes the Neighborhood, she dishes out the cold, hard facts of life with the same veracity as Gretchen Wilson, Miranda Lambert and others who probably would’ve cut “High Class White Trash” and “Used to My Cooking” if they’d thought of them first. The line between gossip and psychotherapy is sometimes mighty thin. There Goes the Neighborhood, the debut album by Jenny Tolman, casts the clever newcomer – hailed by Sound Opinions as a “storyteller par excellence” – as a member of a high-class, white trash welcoming committee, an observant woman who sees other people on her own fictitious block through a humorous, surface-scraping veneer. Tolman conveys her songs with “the sass of Nikki Lane mixed with the clever wordplay of Brandy Clark,” according to Rolling Stone, making a scintillating statement about the complexities of modern femininity by exploring her own womanhood through a make-believe town. Music provides the ideal vehicle for Tolman to examine a sometimes-painful world with a blast of sardonic humor as she continues to distance herself from very difficult teen years and fully embrace her bold, brazen adult viewpoint.

The CCCNY caps the year with a recital not to be missed! Celebrate the Holiday Season with a memorable repertoire of arias featuring the most legendary Spanish and Cuban zarzuelas. The zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre dating back to the 17th century. It alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance. The zarzuela spread to the Spanish colonies, and many Hispanic countries, notably Cuba, developed their own traditions. In Cuba the zarzuelas of Ernesto Lecuona María la O; El cafetal), Eliseo Grenet (La virgen morena) and Gonzalo Roig (Cecilia Valdés), based on Cirilo Villaverde’s classic novel) represent a brief golden age of political and cultural importance. Headlining the program will be soprano Virginia Herrera-Crilly and tenor César Delgado, accompanied by pianist Andrés Sarre.
The world premiere of Saida Santana Mahmut’s play La Indiana, a name that alludes to the cultural legacy emanating from the frequent trips made by so many across the Atlantic, from the Canary Islands to Cuba and back. Starring Ms. Santana herself, the plot revolves around Antonia, the playwright’s great-grandmother, a woman from Canarias who emigrates to Cuba at the turn of the 20th century (1905). After many years in Cuba, she becomes a widow and decides to return to Gran Canaria with her five children, earning the name of “La Indiana,” a nickname that was usually reserved for men. Antonia is the inspiration for a story that aims to capture a particular time during the Canarian migration to Cuba at the beginning of the last century, when many stood astride a cross-cultural junction, and later opted to return to the Canary Islands. The full stage production will be streamed from Madrid, and will be followed by a Q&A with the playwright via Zoom, moderated by Mayra McCarthy, director of our Theater Program.
Two of the most thrilling musical entertainers from Cuba and the Canary Islands join forces in an evening of punto cubano and son. Punto guajiro or punto cubano — or simply punto — is a sung genre of Cuban music, a poetic art with music. It became popular in the western and central regions of Cuba in the 17th century, and consolidated as a genre in the 18th century. Cuban punto arrived in Canarias in the 18th century, but acquired more relevance during the 20th century, a period of significant migration of Canarians to Cuba. Some historians argue that punto cubano, as practiced in Canarias, is a circular phenomenon, moving back and forth from the Canary Islands to Cuba. Son cubano, a form of music and dance that originated in the highlands of Oriente province during the late 19th century, is a syncretic genre that blends elements of Spanish and African origin. Among its fundamental Hispanic components are the vocal style, lyrical meter and the primacy of the tres, a three-course chordophone with six strings, derived from the Spanish guitar. But its characteristic clave rhythm, call and response structure, and percussion section (bongo, maracas, etc.) are all of Bantu origin. Around 1909 the son reached Havana, where the first recordings were made in 1917, marking its expansion throughout the island and becoming Cuba’s most popular and influential genre. The singers’ repertoire will feature a rich variety of numbers emblematic of each genre.

YES, VIRGINIA starring Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers, The Goldbergs) and Arnetia Walker (Broadway’s The Wiz, Dreamgirls) This quirky, feel-good holiday comedy is sure to warm your heart! The story centers on two older women navigating the perils of aging in suburban Detroit. Virginia Campbell was a longtime housekeeper and confidant for Denise Miller and her family, helping Denise raise her children during a difficult divorce. But when she shows up for work, Denise is very confused. Especially since she thought she had let her go several months ago, over a bowl of breadsticks at The Olive Garden. She is sure of it. So why is Virginia here? When an accident in the kitchen keeps Virginia from being able to walk, Denise offers to care for Virginia for a few days until she has healed. Their roles suddenly reversed, they share memories of their lives and families over the course of an evening. Soon they learn secrets about each other that they had kept from everyone else, and bond in a way that they hadn’t been able to in the past, over their very different, but similar pains.
Howard Hewett is one of the most gifted vocalists in the Post-Marvin Gaye era of pop R&B. He started singing as a child, fronting his older sisters in The Hewett Singers. The group toured the gospel circuit. As a teen, Hewett sharpened his crooner skills in a funk band called Lyfe. In 1976, Hewett moved to Los Angeles and formed a group put together by the owners of the historic Maverick’s Flat, called Beverly Hills.
If there’s one particular word which comes to mind while both describing critically hailed saxophonist MIKE PHILLIPS and an ongoing theme of his illustrious music career within the jazz, R&B and even hip-hop worlds, it would be “authentic.” Phillips’ unusually high appreciation for music since early childhood, which manifested into everything from absorbing and learning musical instruments and immersing himself into all things music – his widely-noted, soulfully warm saxophone-driven sound sonically and melodically personifies the term.
I’m from Long Island, NY (pronounced “Lawwwng EYE-lind, New Yawk”). I was raised on gospel music. I played sax thru high school. I studied Vocal Jazz Performance in college and I’m obsessed with gowns, books, candles and Sarah Vaughan…no yoga… no Sarah… no yoga. Oh, I also have A.D.D. That’s it in a nutshell.
Everything in Jon McLaughlin’s life makes its way into his music, whether he’s conscious of it or not. The artist, raised in Indiana and based in Nashville, brings all of his experiences and beliefs into each song he creates, something that is especially true now that he’s the father of two young girls.
In Tennessee Williams’s The Night of the Iguana, a defrocked clergyman encounters inside disturbances amid outside disturbances during one stormy night at the Costa Verde Hotel in Acapulco as the world prepares for World War II. After four women of different ages and backgrounds, along with a 97-year-old poet, engage in the clergyman’s spiritual struggles, their lives leap dramatically forward. And the catalytic, defrocked clergyman makes it through the night. A descriptive look into the life, genius, and struggles of one of the most renowned Renaissance artists with a special focus on his relationship with the “Eternal City” (Rome!). From his first visit in 1496, Michelangelo lived much of his adult life in Rome, embellishing it with some of the greatest masterpieces of Western art. According to his biographer Giorgio Vasari, Michelangelo was the true Renaissance man, “supreme not in one art alone but in all three,” painting, sculpture and architecture. On this virtual tour, we’ll discover his Roman masterpieces in all three forms: the Vatican’s Pietà, the impressive frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and the architectural masterpiece that crowned his career, Saint Peter’s Basilica. About our presenter: Born and raised in Rome, Luca Pietrosanti has always been fascinated by history and the artistic heritage of the city. After graduating with a degree in Art History from the University of Rome Torvergata, he specialized in iconography of Renaissance and Baroque art and studied abroad at Berlin’s Humboldt University. As an official licensed guide, he has led tours for eight years in Rome and the Vatican, mostly for an English speaking audience.

Since appearing on the Atlanta music scene in the late 90s, Anthony David has become a cult favorite. First as an India Arie collaborator and later as a solo act, David has established himself not only as a performer but as a prolific songwriter and musician. In 2004, as he toured to promote his debut album, Three Cords and the Truth, he mesmerized concertgoers with the unique pairing of his voice and his signature acoustic guitar. A second independent album, The Red Clay Chronicles (2006), was pivotal in securing a deal with Universal Records and led to the release of Acey Ducey (2008), which produced a hit duet with India Arie and earned a Grammy nomination. His international star rising, David followed up Acey Ducey with As Above, So Below (2011), featuring Shawn Stockman and Phonte, plus a hit duet, 4Evermore, with Algebra. By the release of Love Out Loud in 2012, David counted among his fan base President and First Lady Obama. Following The PowerFUL Now in 2016, the Savannah native got to work on Hello Like Before: The Songs of Bill Withers (2018), a tribute to an artist David says has been, in many ways, most influential to his musical career.

Witness Bette triumph over misogyny to win roles and compensation on par with her male counterparts. See what happens when someone who always wins…loses. Through conversations with her mother Ruthie, her friendship with Olivia De Havilland, stories about her love affair with William Wyler, her four failed marriages, her unpleasant relationship with her daughter, ageism in Hollywood, and her feelings of regret about her groundbreaking court case with Warner Brothers (which she lost), we experience Bette’s most defining moments and her at her most vulnerable. What do you know about the man the Teddy Bear was named for? President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt is one of the most fascinating people of the 20th century. Phil Johnson stars in this new one-man show and brings this multi-faceted character to life in a truly riveting, energetic, and passionate performance. In this gripping 90-minute presentation, the new president grapples with the issues that would define his term: taking on the trusts, trying to get his message across to the people, and his colossal challenge – the coal strike of 1902. Miners and others were killed, tensions were high, and - the biggest threat of all - innocent people were at risk of freezing to death that winter. This American president dealt with these in his own relentless energetic way. He was a great man, a great American. By the way, TR was not a fan of the nickname “Teddy!”

Vinyasa (meaning “flow” in English) is a blanket term used by yogis to describe a multi-disciplinary class which focuses on alignment and breath awareness while moderately flowing from one posture to the next using breath as the vehicle. This class pulls from some of the many different paths of yoga including Iyengar, Hatha, Power and Ashtanga yoga. Using sun salutations and breath-linked movement to transition from one pose to the next makes for a physically challenging class that allows students to flow and focus on their breath while detoxing the body, mind and spirit. This class is suitable for intermediate beginners up to advanced students.
Take a half an hour to step away from the busy in this one hour calming meditation. Sit, connect and be still to see what you need to see. This offering is a guided experience, all levels welcome. Hilaire has been practicing meditation and yoga for over 30 years. She has found healing through breathe work to work through her throat cancer and brother’s death. Without taking the time to meditation, she literally would not have found the cancer lump on her throat while practicing. Meditation saved her life. The severity of Hilaire’s case forced her to have five total full neck dissections with lymph removal. She found the recurrence of cancer every time in meditation. On top of all of this, between her third and fourth surgeries her little brother went missing. About two months later, pieces of him were found in the Grand River. No one teaches us to process such brutal loss. Hilaire was trying to stay alive, and she was left wondering how she was supposed to wrap her head around the brutality of his murder and even more importantly, life without him. Hilaire believes that yoga and meditation enables us to see inside ourselves, including our ugliness, sadness, and trauma, and find a way to process this reality so that we can heal and experience joy.

It all started when Chain Reaction banded together in South Florida and began re-creating the sounds of the American super group, Journey. They wanted to pay special homage to Journey’s best years (1977-1998), when Steve Perry fronted the band. The amazing voice of John D’Agostino, coupled with the exceptional musical talents of four equally sophisticated and experienced musicians soon propelled Chain Reaction to become one of the premier Journey reverence bands of our time. The band strives to re-create the exact sounds and nuances of Journey. Their passion for authenticity and attention to detail go a long way toward ensuring that the audience feels like they’re at a real Journey concert. While the band has enjoyed performing the music of Journey, front man John D’Agostino also loves another American super group, Styx. Turns out the rest of the band are huge Styx fans, too. So they began adding some of Styx’s best tunes to their already expansive repertoire of Journey material. The audience response was so positive, that Forever Styx was eventually added as a separate tribute band. Now you can have the best both worlds inside THE BOX this December!
Ranked by TripAdvisor as one of the top 10% of attractions worldwide and Yelp’s best rated performing arts event in Washington DC, The Magic Duel is launching a live, streaming version. After 5 years of highly rated live shows, this 60-minute, virtual performance will soon pit magical boomer Mark Phillips against conjuring zoomer Ryan Phillips in a duel for the title of DC’s Best Magician. More than a magic show featuring 2 world class magicians, the Magic Duel is part AGT, part Survivor and part Top Chef (without the yelling or the food). Delivered directly to your living room, this live, streaming conjuring competition lets audience members choose the challenges, judge each magician’s efforts, and vote for their favorite! Audience members can purchase participant tickets to interact directly with the performers via Skype, making decisions that affect the outcome of tricks or having their minds read remotely and in real time! In addition, the format of a virtual show means most of the magic performed will be skill based sleight-of-hand popularized by stars of magic like Shin Lim. This is your chance to see what magicians call “finger-flinging” up close on screen. Each ticket serves as admission for a single household; families are welcome and the magic is designed to entertain ages 12 and above.

Still Waiting In The Wings follows the trials and triumphs of actors waiting tables in Times Square. While dreaming of the Broadway stage, the reality of slinging hash under florescent lights mixes sweet aspirations with bitter drama. There’s no people like show people and there’s no telling what can happen when they’re pitted against each other. Nick Adams, Ed Asner, Carole Cook, Lee Meriwether, Patricia Richardson, Chita Rivera, Seth Rudetsky, Sally Struthers, Bruce Vilanch, and Cindy Williams round out this heartwarming homage to Broadway with some delightful cameos.
WAITING IN THE WINGS: THE MUSICAL stars two entertainers, destined for the big time, who are mismatched in a casting office from two very different online contests. Tony (Adam Huss), a stripper from New York, is cast in an Off-Broadway musical and needs to trade in his tear-away trunks for tap shoes and tights. Anthony (Jeffrey A Johns), a naive musical theatre enthusiast from Montana, needs to decide if he can strip all the way down just to stay in town. Hilarity ensues as they realize that in order to “make it” they’re going have to learn some new tricks. Shirley Jones, Sally Struthers, and Lee Meriwether round out this heartwarming homage to Broadway with some delightful cameos.

On May 13th, 2016 Iggy Pop has concert at the Royal Albert Hall. This show is described as performance of a lifetime. Pop had recorded the album Post Pop Depression with Joshua Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age as a highly personal and introspective reflection back on his career to date. Post Pop Depression is the 17th Iggy Pop album-and the first to be co-created with producer/ guitarist/ songwriter/ multi instrumentalist/bandleader Homme. This album becoming and his first US top 20 album and first UK top 5 album. Joined on stage by something of a super-group featuring Homme, Fertita, Helders, Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens Of The Stone Age, and guitar legend Matt Sweeney, Iggy storms through a selection of tracks from Post Pop Depression and his 1977 David Bowie-produced albums – The Idiot and Lust For Life. The Royal Albert Hall was packed to capacity and Iggy performed one of the standout shows of his career. The Post Pop Depression backing band supported Pop’s punk antics with a rock ‘n’ roll homage of their own to a true original. An unmissable musical event, which was hailed by The Sunday Telegraph as one of the best gigs the reviewer had ever seen and now it is rebroadcasted on FITE! Don’t miss it!

For the college students, it was at a skyscraper in the penthouse on the 25th floor. The Christmas party was in a backyard outside in a tent with family and friends.

In this completely online and live event, you’ll be able to see and hear the other participants while playing. You also get to meet and interact with other participants and be virtually introduced to other Buffy fans. At game time, your host will read off several trivia questions about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Your goal is to come up with the right answer to each question and write it down on your paper. Once the round is over (about 6 questions), we’ll go through the answers and determine who had the highest score for the round. The highest scorer will get a raffle ticket for a chance to win a prize at the end of the event. We’ll have several rounds of play. Prizes may include an Amazon Gift Card and free admission to future events.
