A theater company most terrible is about to stage a murder most foul … no good can come of this. Actually, these wannabe thespians will be lucky to make it through opening night without some real corpses stacking up, because this is The Play That Goes Wrong. And boy, does it. But what’s a chaotic series of mishaps for them makes for “the funniest play Broadway has ever seen” (Huffington Post) and proof that sometimes a show can be so wrong, it’s right. Broadway’s most award-winningest comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong has racked up more laurels than Caesar, conquering stages from Paris to London to Broadway, and now it’s returning to wreak hilarious havoc on New World Stages. See for yourself why Forbes said, “You’ll never have a better time in a theater!”

Relive the past on this exciting three-hour guided walking tour during which your guide will help make the past come alive. In 1920, the United States enacted the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, banning liquor production, public consumption and the selling of any alcoholic products. This catapulted the criminal world and helped the mob monopolize and grow their illegal business of alcohol production. Some of the most vicious gangsters gained fortune and fame. Illegal bars known as speakeasies opened all over the country and served bootleg liquor to the thirsty public. As Al Capone said, “All I do is supply a public demand.” You’ll start your tour at Petrosino Square and walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. At each of the three to four stops you can (legally) sip a craft cocktail, beer or wine or even a shot available for purchase and served by the top bartenders in New York. While sipping on your now “legal” alcoholic beverage you’ll hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated society. By the end of the tour you will be a “wiseguy” about Prohibition and the mob.

A self-proclaimed “drinking club with a Shakespeare problem,” the merry members of New York’s Drunk Shakespeare Society invite you to The Lounge for a night of suds and sonnets, cocktails and couplets, booze and … well, you get the idea. As one member of this talented cast of lead-livered actors imbibes more than their fair share of liquid courage, an outrageous evening of theater ensues as they attempt to lead the rest of the cast through a Shakespeare story in just over one hour. Rest assured, the results will be sloppy, silly and occasionally iambic as the night devolves into inevitable debauchery.

Born in Minneapolis, pianist Jill McCarron spent her childhood and teen years in Canada. She is a graduate of Humber College in Toronto, having majored in jazz performance and arranging under the tutelage of Ron Collier, who himself had served as arranger to Duke Ellington in the 70s. While in Toronto she performed regularly with her ensembles in the city’s top venues, including George’s Spaghetti House and the Montreal Bistro. Shortly after completing her studies at the New School, the Jill McCarron Quintet won first place in the Cognac Hennessy Jazz Competition, which led to a spot in the national finals in Los Angeles. Jill has worked and toured with such notable artists as the great trumpeter Randy Brecker, alto saxist Vincent Herring, tenor saxist Don Braden, guitarist Russell Malone, bassists Harvie S. and Jay Leonhart, among many others. She continues to be in demand in the NYC area as a jazz artist, as well as for solo piano and vocals in clubs and for private engagements. See Jill McCarron play at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown.
For a singer with such powerful pipes, it’s something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a “listener.” Then again, maybe it’s her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her tribute to Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston its amazing accuracy. Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them — something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors in this concert at Groove.
The trials and tribulations of being young are always pretty universal, no matter what stage you are in life. This modern musical gives a voice to the youth of today while also speaking volumes on the human condition as a whole.

She was comfortable with her life until she met the smart, kind and handsome Bryson Robbins. An interactive singles/dating event where you connect with potential romantic partners without the painful introduction to make yourself sound interesting. Using structured activity with body painting, you’ll share stories that make you interesting. Conversely, you’ll discover interesting facts of others (because talking about what they do and the weather are not sexy). How does it work? You will get a prompt in the form of a question. Your answer will be painted on your body by your partner. You get to choose where and how big. You get 10 minutes with each partner before the men move to another partner (5 minute each, then switch roles). What are the rules? No nudity. You’ll be asked to wear a tank top or anything you feel comfortable with. Just make sure you expose some body parts for the paintings — you can only touch your partner using the paint brush. You must comply with the request of your partner for the painting location on their body. Have fun and laugh! Do you have to be an artist? NO. In fact, even if you’re an artist, you will end up with something that you wouldn’t want to frame, because you will only have 5 minutes to paint each piece. We’ll see stick figures and all kinds of things that will prompt laughter. Age range for this event: 25 – 40.

The first Broadway play written by an African-American woman, A Raisin in the Sun is a masterpiece that The New York Times credits with changing American theater forever. First produced in 1959 and adapted two years later into a now-classic film starring Sidney Poitier, A Raisin in the Sun is as powerful today as it was 50 years ago. Now Harlem Repertory Theatre presents the limited return of this incredible story to their stage — a story that follows the Youngers, an African-American family attempting to move from a crowded two-bedroom apartment into a “white” neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. But a new house is just one of the Youngers’ many dreams. Three generations each yearn for different versions of a better life — whether it’s a business, or a spouse, or the right to live with long-denied dignity.

Come to New York City’s legendary Cafe Wha? for this Musical Salute to the Soulful Ladies of the ’90s: Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson & Toni Braxton featuring Emilie Surtees. For a singer with such powerful pipes, it’s something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a “listener.” Then again, maybe it’s her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her performances their amazing accuracy. Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them — something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors.

Boasting sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch, Chicago tells the tale of accused murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who’ll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. During the showy decadence of the 1920s, their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. A smash on Broadway (winning six Tony Awards) and on the big screen (winning six Academy Awards), this biting satire features the unforgettable songs of Kander and Ebb, including “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and many more hits. Enjoy this musical trip back to a time when a little razzle-dazzle made everything just fine in this dazzling production at the Ambassador Theatre in the heart of Broadway.

American Classical Orchestra sets a celebratory tone, as it opens its 35th season with an array of spirited works by three of the most prolific Classical-era composers. David Belkovski, winner of ACO’s first Sfzp International Fortepiano Competition, brings youthful energy to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. On the cusp of Beethoven at 250, we perform his Symphony No. 2, a work both noble and joyful. In contrast to the opera’s dark, Oedipal subject matter, the overture to Rossini’s Semiramide delights with charm, wit, and more than a few good musical jokes.

Come to New York City’s Club Bonafide for this musical salute to Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson and Toni Braxton featuring Emilie Surtees.

Join a pub crawl at the Crossworlds of the World and learn about Prohibition and its effects on world-famous Times Square. In 1910s, Times Square was the new entertainment center of New York. The legitimate theater industry was moving in. Fancy restaurants called lobster palaces were in vogue. Illegal casinos would be opening up. Prostitution would spill north from the Tenderloin district. And then the most dramatic change would occur — Prohibition. On this three-hour pub crawl, see the locations of where New York’s underworld held court during the Great Experiment. Visit a hotel dubbed the Country Club of 42nd Street that closed due to Prohibition. Gain entrance to a speakeasy on the famous Club Row. Drink where the Broadway stars and fans had dined for a generation. Hit a swanky bar located in a famous Art Deco hotel. Step into a famous deli where a visionary gangster funded the vice that made Times Square the epicenter of 1920s New York Jazz Age. All this and more on this boozy pub crawl at the Crossroads of the World.

Prohibition was a unique period of time in American history. Perhaps nowhere in New York City was this more demonstrated than in the pre-dominantly Irish neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. On this three-hour pub crawl, we will stop at three bars that were once speakeasies in Hell’s Kitchen for drinks. Having the benefit of being next to the Hudson River, many of the early successful bootleggers in New York City were Hell’s Kitchen residents at some point in their lives either in their formative years or as adults. They would utilize the coming and goings of ships on the Hudson River, called rum runners, to receive illicit alcohol. We will learn about who many of these early bootleggers were, their schemes and the organization they belonged to dedicated to trafficking in the shipped alcohol. We will also learn of the rebels amongst these scofflaws — those independent-minded gangsters who often didn’t play by underworld’s rules and the consequences of their actions. Further, we will see how Prohibition ended and how the gangsters ended—either their lives or their careers as bootleggers.
